Move over, tahini toast and one-pan chicken! There’s something even trendier on the mind of America’s most famous domestic diva. In a progressive move, Martha Stewart will develop marijuana-derived products as part of her new partnership with the Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth Corp. Per The Associated Press, the pot purveyors tapped Stewart to help them create a line of hemp-based CBD lifestyle items for people and pets.
Stewart will have an advisory role in the new line, according to Canopy Growth Corp.’s CEO, Bruce Linton. In a statement, Stewart seemed excited to venture into the rapidly growing cannabis market, saying, “I am delighted to establish this partnership with Canopy Growth and share with them the knowledge I have gained after years of experience in the subject of living. I’m especially looking forward to our first collaboration together, which will offer sensible products for people’s beloved pets.”
The announcement, although certainly outside of her image as a more traditional doyenne of domesticity, makes sense for Stewart in more ways than one. For starters, she always seems to have a beat on the hottest lifestyle trends. While the cannabis/CBD market is still tenuous (and even illegal in some states), it’s definitely on the rise. For reference, Forbes predicts that even CBD-infused beverages are expected to be a $600 million business by 2022.
Another reason the move makes sense is due to Stewart’s unconventional but long-lasting friendship with pot pioneer Snoop Dogg — in 2016, the pair began hosting VH1’s Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, where references to weed were not uncommon. In addition to launching his own brand of marijuana products back in 2015, the rapper created a media company called Merry Jane that serves to celebrate marijuana culture.
As you might have guessed, Snoop had a hand in his friend’s, ahem, budding venture. Canopy Growth Corp. has been producing Snoop’s Leafs by Snoop cannabis line for three years. This led Snoop to introduce the company to Stewart, who told The Hollywood Reporter last June that she was being courted by cannabis companies for brand partnerships. “She had to be sure we were competent because her reputation is of great value,” Linton told The Associated Press.
So, if you see Stewart out and about in the near future looking high on life, it might just be thanks to her sure-to-be lucrative new side hustle.
