Katy Perry Shares on American Idol How She First Got Orlando Bloom’s Attention

During Sunday night’s American Idol season premiere, Katy Perry recalled her first meeting with Orlando Bloom, her current fiancé. The details Perry includes about this couple’s meet-cute are just too sweet and getting to hear how it all began will undoubtedly make you believe that finding your person can happen in the most unexpected ways.

During her audition on the season opener, American Idol contestant Johanna Jones told judges Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie that her day job was working at an In-N-Out Burger in Las Vegas. Upon hearing this, Perry seemingly felt inspired to share that she met Bloom over a table of filled with In-N-Out burgers back in 2016 at a Golden Globes afterparty.

“We were at the Golden Globes,” Perry shared, “and we weren’t together. So I had my security guard grab 10 In-N-Outs and all of a sudden I see [Bloom’s] hand — he wasn’t even sitting at our table — he just swoops in and he grabs it and I was like, ‘Hey, that’s my burger!’

Bryan chimed in, joking “And you were like, ‘Ohhh, you’re on the other end of that hand.'”

“Yeah, I did,” Perry replied.

Jones then quipped, “In-N-Out creates true love.”

Perry answered, “It really does!”

Perry even tweeted about her interaction with Jones on the season premiere, wishing for a friendship with possible In-N-Out benefits in the process.

“Oh #JohannaJones works @InNOutBurger? We can totally be best friends. (promise I’m not just using you for your employee meal discount),” Perry wrote.

In the years since Perry and Bloom first met, their relationship has weathered some ups and downs, including a brief split, but Perry’s joy at her engagement to the English actor is clear, like when she went into detail recently on Jimmy Kimmel Live! about how exactly his epic helicopter proposal went down.

“It was very sweet,” Perry said in the clip. “It was Valentine’s Day … we went to dinner and I thought we were going to go see some art after dinner but we pulled up to a helicopter.”

“Very Bachelor,” Kimmel replied.

“Yeah. I’m glad I don’t have to go on that show now. High five!” Perry laughed. “… But it was really sweet. He asked me to marry him in a helicopter.”

Things did not go according to plan, however.

“The funny part is we had champagne in the helicopter and the [ring] box was in his pocket and he had written down everything he wanted to say on a note,” Perry explained. She said that the note was meant to keep her occupied while he fished out the ring, but he wound up ripping the lining of his jacket and sticking his elbow in the champagne bucket.

All’s well that ends well, though: “We landed on a rooftop [in Los Angeles] and my whole family was there, and all of my friends,” Perry told Kimmel. “He did so well.”

We just love hearing all of these cute stories about Perry and Bloom, so if our favorite American Idol judge has anything more to say about her relationship history with Bloom, we’re all ears.
