In the wake of news that he was hospitalized after suffering a stroke just days ago, it was reported on Monday afternoon that Beverly Hills 90210 alum and Riverdale actor Luke Perry has died at age 52. Prior to reports of his stroke, the actor had no reported health concerns.
Perry suffered the stroke while at his home in Sherman Oaks, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. It was unclear at the time what Perry’s condition was following his admittance to a local hospital. As such, it was not known at the time the severity of the stroke or what potential health complications Perry faced.
Following reports of his death on Monday, his rep released a statement on his passing: “Actor Luke Perry, 52, passed away today after suffering a massive stroke. He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends. The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning. No further details will be released at this time.”
News of Perry’s hospitalization came on the heels of an announcement that a six-episode Beverly Hills 90210 limited series reboot is officially in the works at Fox, with many members of the original cast included. At the time, it was unclear whether Perry would join his fellow former cast mates.
On Sunday, Perry’s former 90210 costar Shannen Doherty told Entertainment Tonight that she was in touch with Perry during his hospital stay. “I can’t talk about it here ’cause I will literally start crying but I love him and he knows I love him,” she said “It’s Luke, and he’s my Dylan,” Doherty said, referring to his 90210 character, Dylan McKay.
Perry leaves behind a commendable legacy, with over 95 acting credits to his name, including roles on the aforementioned hit ’90s series 90210 and current hit Riverdale. Perry was also a credited director, producer and screenwriter.
Following news of his death, our thoughts go out to Perry’s family, as well as his acting families on 90210, Riverdale and beyond. Per Variety, Perry is survived by his two children, Sophie and Jack. He will appear posthumously in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, in which he plays the real-life Canadian-American actor Wayne Maunder. It’s unclear how Riverdale will handle Perry’s death within the confines of the show during its current season.
