Get the tissues ready! Netflix released the first trailer for Queer Eye season three and we are already teary-eyed just hearing their heroes’ (which is how they refer to participants in the rebooted makeover show) voiceovers. The new trailer also reveals Queer Eye‘s first lesbian hero and their first duo, which are major milestones for the show. Plus, they’ve moved on from Georgia to Kansas City, Missouri for season three. All things considered, our level excitement for the next round of Queer Eye is high.
In addition to the Fab Five’s first lesbian makeover and their first dual makeover, season three also features a woman with deep grief from losing her younger brother, a man who admits to past substance abuse issues and at least two others whose stories we’re eager to learn.
“I was drinking a lot. It was tough. I’m running out of options,” says one hero and after, we hear another hero say, “I feel like I don’t belong. They expected me to be someone else: More black, less white, more gay, less gay. I feel like I don’t belong.”
Before know it, the camera cuts to Jonathan Van Ness, the series’ hair, skin care and makeup guru. As if to refute those statements and instead build up those heroes in light of their testimonies, he snaps his fingers as he says, “Absolutely not!”
Then, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Now That I Found You” starts to play and the theme of the season takes hold as we hear: “This is the season to love yourself.” Queer Eye has always encouraged its heroes to find value in themselves and honor their self-worth, but it seems to be a particular focus of season three. Affirmations from Van Ness, as well as Karamo Brown (Culture) and Tan France (Fashion) work in tandem with advice from Bobby Berk (Interior Design) and Antoni Porowski (Food).
Queer Eye has sought to feature a more diverse cast than its predecessor, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, since the first season premiered on Netflix last year. In season two, they featured their first woman hero as well as a transgender man. In season three, they are continuing to feature marginalized voices, which is absolutely a step in the right direction if you ask us.
Queer Eye season three premieres on Netflix on Friday, March 15.
