We all get by with a little help from our friends, and sometimes those friends become the people who save us. One such example is Full Housealum John Stamos, who credited costar Jodie Sweetin for his sobriety in a recent speech. Per Variety, he honored Sweetin’s crucial role in his life at a Writers in Treatment event in Los Angeles last Thursday night. She was the guest of honor at the event, there to receive the nonprofit’s Experience, Strength and Hope Award for her 2009 memoir, unSweetined, and for her advocacy work in the recovery community.
“It took me a long time, a long time disappointing everyone who cared about me, culminating in a terrible [2015] DUI where I could have killed somebody,” said Stamos, reportedly getting emotional as he added, “I hit rock bottom. Jodie lovingly allowed me to walk my own path and when I finally humbled myself to ask for your help, I realized that the perky little blabbermouth had become the master of wisdom and was right by my side during some of the most difficult days of my life.”
Sweetin, who is approaching eight years of sobriety, happily stepped up to help Stamos get clean, too. This included organizing 12-step meetings for Stamos, both at his house and on the set of their Netflix reboot, Fuller House. “Thank God, my wife [Caitlin McHugh] and my new son [Billy, 10 months] will only know me as a sober husband and father. This is Jodie’s legacy in my life,” Stamos said.

Stamos also took to Instagram later that evening to gush about Sweetin, saying, “Proud moment last night honoring @jodiesweetin at the Experience, Hope & Strength Awards. Who knew this little blonde scene-stealer in a side pony-tale would grow up and change so many lives (Mine included). Her sobriety is inspirational, to say the least. Congrats Jodie on this awards recognizing your extraordinary journey. You give so many people HOPE. Love you! UJ.”
Stamos’ sign-off, “UJ,” is a nod to his Full (and Fuller) House character, Uncle Jesse — the uncle to Sweetin’s precocious Stephanie Tanner. The respect goes both ways, too. When Sweetin spoke, she took a moment to compliment Stamos as well.
“John, I’m so proud of you and it’s been the greatest thing to watch someone that you love have that light come back on,” she said before going on to thank her parents and friends in the crowd. Sweetin then addressed her fellow recovering addicts in the room. “When we are out there using and active in our addiction, we don’t get that luxury,” she pointed out. “We don’t get that luxury of having so many people love us because we don’t love ourselves.”
Looks like little Stephanie Tanner doesn’t have to tell anyone to pin a rose to their nose anymore. She’s all grown up and out in the real world changing lives. Good on you, Steph!
