Tom Hanks’ Granddaughters Have No Clue He’s a Celebrity (& They Don’t Care)

Some celebrities are so laidback that it’s only natural to wonder how they stay grounded. Well, the mystery has been solved for one iconic movie star. Chatting with Us Weekly on Friday, March 1, Tom Hanks‘ son, Colin Hanks, revealed that dad Hanks’ grandkids have no idea he’s famous. In fact, joked Colin, “They don’t care about him at all.” Ouch! That’s one way to keep your head from floating into the stratosphere from fame — a dose of perspective from a few tiny non-fans.

It goes without saying that Colin probably doesn’t mean to imply his daughters Olivia, 8, and Charlotte, 5, don’t care about their grandpa at all. It’s his fame that they have no use for. Colin went on to explain that anytime the girls spend with their grandfather is “like every other playdate with a grandparent.” And you know what that means, right?

“The grandparent gives them stuff they shouldn’t be having, and the grandparents don’t listen to what the parents are saying they should be doing,” elaborated Colin.

Also, rest assured that Tom isn’t the only one whose celebrity gets shafted in the family. Colin, who’s an accomplished actor and director himself, playfully pointed out that he reminds his kids “every day” how “cool” he is… to no avail.

“Children are great humblers,” he shared with Us Weekly. “They don’t care what you do [or] what you have done. They just want to do their kid stuff.”

Olivia and Charlotte’s humbling attitude toward their grandparents doesn’t seem to bother Tom and wife Rita Wilson. To the contrary, per Closer Weekly, Hanks and Wilson reportedly deemed themselves “the cool grandparents.” The couple, who go by the traditional Greek grandparent monikers of “pappou” and “yia yia,” relish the time they get to spend with Olivia, Charlotte and their son Chet Hanks’ daughter, Michaiah, who was born in 2016.

“Tom’s a kid at heart and thrives on playing chase or portraying a funny monster to his granddaughters, and Rita sings and dances with them,” a source told Closer.

Still, it would seem Hanks is at least a little aware of the fact his celebrity status doesn’t curry any favor when his grandkids are around, joking that they “just put up with us.” Little do those girls realize they get to enjoy regular playdates with the man who voices Woody in Toy Story. Lucky!
