Queen Elizabeth II Shares Her First Instagram Post & We Can’t Stop Smiling

Queen Elizabeth II: the world’s next great social media star? It’s looking that way to us because on Thursday, Queen Elizabeth debuted her very first Instagram post on the royal family‘s Instagram account. It’s a huge step for the queen, connecting to the world in a very modern way. Fingers crossed, this isn’t the last time we see her share a photo because we can’t stop smiling over her first post.

The long-reigning monarch posted about her visit to London’s Science Museum, giving followers a sneak peek at what happened earlier on Thursday. In the post, the queen shared a photo of a letter sent to Prince Albert — her great-great-grandfather, for those keeping track of her family tree. The letter was written by mathematician and inventor Charles Babbage, and the missive clearly tickled the queen’s fancy enough to be Instagram debut-worthy.

In a very modern touch, Queen Elizabeth reportedly posted to Instagram from an iPad. No hashtags or emojis were used by the queen, but we applaud the elegant and informative nature of her very first social media post:

“Today, as I visit the Science Museum I was interested to discover a letter from the Royal Archives, written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather Prince Albert,” she captioned the post. “Charles Babbage, credited as the world’s first computer pioneer, designed the ‘Difference Engine,’ of which Prince Albert had the opportunity to see a prototype in July 1843. In the letter, Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert about his invention the ‘Analytical Engine’ upon which the first computer programmes were created by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron. Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors.”

Queen Elizabeth ended the caption with a simple signature, writing, “Elizabeth R.” What’s not to love?

We’re so loving this special social media time with the royals and knowing that Queen Elizabeth is getting in on the fun only makes it that much better. Long live Queen Elizabeth II, or rather, long live Instagrammer Elizabeth R.
