It looks like Britney Spears’ hits will score a new Broadway musical, and we’re ready to pre-order tickets, like, yesterday. Headed to the stage this fall, Once Upon a One More Time boasts a badass premise. Per People, it will follow the exploits of a group of fairy tale princesses who come together for a book club meeting — only to have “a rogue fairy godmother” drop a copy of Betty Friedan’s 1963 feminist touchstone, The Feminine Mystique, in their laps. Seriously, can it be fall yet? We need tickets ASAP.
We’re not the only ones who are psyched, either. In a statement about the musical, Spears commented, “I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs — especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore. This is a dream come true for me!”
Spears has also been pretty hands-on with the development of the production. As producer James L. Nederlander notes in that same statement, “Throughout her career, Britney has captivated fans across the globe with her singular brand of energy and resilience. For three years, we have been working closely with her to develop a concept that perfectly encapsulates her unique spirit, and are so thrilled to finally bring this joyous and electrifying show to the stage.”
The jukebox musical — whose title is clearly a riff on Spears’ 1998 hit “Baby One More Time” — was written by Jon Hartmere (The Upside, Bare) and will be directed by Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages). It will feature choreography by World of Dance stars Keone and Mari Madrid. Per Newsday, the show will steer away from the bio-musical territory of productions like Jersey Boys and follow more in the fantasy vein of Head Over Heels.
In other words, it’s anyone’s best guess how the story will go and how Spears’ songs will tie into it… but it sounds like one hell of an excuse to have a girls’ night out. So save the date now, because Once Upon a One More Time will open on Nov. 13 at James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago before heading to New York City.
