Ben Affleck Defends His Back Tattoo, Says it ‘Represents Something Important’

No matter what the world thinks, Ben Affleck is proud of his back tattoo. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday, Affleck opened up about his massive phoenix tattoo, noting that he’s heard the criticisms but ultimately, they don’t affect him that much. It’s the kind of attitude we can get behind.

“I like it,” Affleck told host Ellen DeGeneres about the tattoo, which garnered plenty of commentary when it was revealed in a series of photos of Affleck swimming last year. “It’s something I sort of kept private,” he continued. “It wasn’t like I was sort of doing photo shoots or whatever. We were two hours north of the city on some island in Hawaii and we didn’t know paparazzi was there. So they got a picture of my tattoo and yeah, the sentiment ran, you know, against.”

He also told DeGeneres that the harsh criticism doesn’t bother him a bit. Affleck called the tattoo “meaningful” and said it “represents something really important to me.” He added, “I was like, I love my tattoo. I’m very happy with it. Luckily I’m the one who has it.”

Of course, he also went along with DeGeneres’ joke about the tattoo’s placement, which she noted is “rising from your ass.”

Affleck quipped, “We didn’t even plan that bit. That’s what you get when you’re a comedian. You can do that kind of thing. Very quick.”

Affleck also opened up about the tough times he’s had over the last few years, including rehab for his alcoholism in the midst of his divorce from Jennifer Garner. Garner has reportedly been a major source of support for Affleck despite their split and the two are happily co-parenting their two kids, who seemingly don’t mind their dad’s phoenix tattoo one bit. Affleck is even a coach for his son’s little league team. He seems to be doing well and we hope that trend continues.
