This video is super sweet but also deeply personal, so it makes sense that this celebrity mom waited to share it with the world. On Monday, Hilary Duffposted a video from the moments right after her daughter Banks Violet Blair’s birth that shows the initial meeting between them and Duff’s boyfriend, Matthew Koma, in October. In her caption, Duff opened up about the special moment and celebrated Banks turning five months, as well as her daughter recently getting over a bout of colic.
“I’ve been wondering for a long time if I would ever share this video as it is extremely personal,” Duff wrote about the black and white video taken by her doula Rebecca Coursey, who is also a photographer. “It was so absolutely lovely and rewarding (and shocking) that after giving birth to my baby girl we hugged … for the first time, In my mind I like to believe that she was saying good job mom. Go team go. We did it. Together.”
In the video, baby Banks reached for Duff and wraps both arms around her neck as they sit together in a tub full of water. As she revealed in November, Duff opted for a home birth for her second child, more specifically a water birth. At the time, she admitted that she was in labor for longer than her midwives expected, which led to some frustration.
At one point, she told Dr. Elliot Berlin on the Informed Pregnancy podcast at the time, Koma encouraged her to relax and Duff snapped, “You have to shut up. You’re going to die if you say that again!”
In Monday’s Instagram post, she still expressed gratitude for Koma’s presence: “Matt provided such a safe calm strength,” she said, adding, “My mommy and sissy were there to cheer me on, and of course my birth angels to make sure all was well and big brother [Luca Cruz, 6] (downstairs deep in Legos).”

“I cannot believe this day was only 5 months ago!!” Duff continued. “It seems like B has been here with us all along. The time is already going so fast..she tried avocado yesterday! Anyway… feeling blessed for this full hectic life and all the people in it. Happy 5 months Banks (oh and thanks for quitting colic) that was a doozy.”
Duff, who will be playing late actress Sharon Tate in The Haunting of Sharon Tate, has been candid about all aspects of motherhood. In addition to this sweet first hug, the actress told the Informed Pregnancy podcast in November that she drank her placenta in a smoothie rather than eating it or taking it in pill form. In January, she spoofed the now infamous photo of Rachel McAdams pumping breast milk with a photo of her own that was slightly less glamorous.
