Ahead of the April 14 premiere of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, theories abound on who will live, who will die and of course, who will take the much-coveted Iron Throne. Although there’s no way of knowing what will happen since the cast and crew are keeping mum about potential spoilers, there’s no stopping the speculation, especially when former cast members join the fun. On Monday, former Littlefinger actor Aidan Gillen told Express who he predicts will win the throne: no one.
That’s right. Gillen, whose character Petyr Baelish was killed last season per orders from Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), doesn’t think anyone will win the war that’s been raging across Westeros all this time. “I don’t picture that being a thing that’s going to happen. It would be a bit boring,” he said.
Since Game of Thrones first premiered in 2011, Gillen said the feeling behind the show and its purpose has changed. “I don’t know, I think initially that was the thing—there was a quest for an ultimate winner who was going to rule from the Iron Throne. But it doesn’t feel that’s what it’s about any more,” he said. “It could be that, and maybe that’s the surprise ending and that’s who it is. I don’t know who it’s going to be. Somebody nice!”

We’re not sure if there’s anyone “nice” left in Westeros, but it would be nice to see someone take the throne who isn’t blood-thirsty or hellbent on destruction, right? All we know so far about the Game of Thrones series finale is that when Kit Harington told his wife (and former co-star) Rose Leslie about the ending, she didn’t speak to him for days. We also know that Turner thinks the finale will divide fans.
Could Gillen’s theory be right? Will no one sit upon the Iron Throne at the end of it all? On one hand, it would be quite the poetic ending; on the other, we are always rooting for our faves to win.
