It’s not an understatement to say that in the last few months, Khloé Kardashian has been through hell and back where her relationship with Tristan Thompson is concerned. But with Sunday, March 31 marking the season 16 premiere of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, fans were treated to the painful reminder that KUWTK season 16 begins with Kardashian praising her relationship with Thompson and showing them in a good place as a couple and parents to their daughter, True. In light of this, we have to wonder: how much of season 16 is focused on the good times between Kardashian and Thompson and, more importantly, how long will it take before we watch things break down between these two?
As reported by Entertainment Tonight, the KUWTK season 16 premiere set up what will undoubtedly be major arcs over the course of the season, like Kim Kardashian and hubby Kanye West (making his KUWTK talking head debut on Sunday night, too!) announcing they’re having a fourth child later this year via surrogate. Another storyline whose groundwork was laid in the opening episode was about Kardashian and Thompson’s relationship, showing them still in the midst of a good period before things will eventually go all kinds of sideways in February.
At various points in the episode filmed last fall, Kardashian and Thompson are seen cooing to one another on FaceTime, with Thompson calling Kardashian “babe” and them both saying “I love you” to one another. Kardashian also notes in a solo interview that she has “come to a place in my life where I am super comfortable” and is making “a conscious effort” to “drown out” negativity from the outside world. Again, as we all know now but which the season 16 premiere version of Kardashian doesn’t, this domestic bliss will be short-lived.
Of course, KUWTK didn’t shy away from hinting at the trouble that was coming down the pike. At another point, Kardashian puts the focus on updating viewers about True while hinting at Thompson’s past cheating allegations, saying, “It’s been a few months, me and Tristan are great, and I am loving being a mommy. It’s bittersweet. I love seeing every milestone with her but I feel like she grows, like, in one week she’s like a completely different baby.”
We know that things are going to get ugly on season 16 with Kardashian and Thompson, as we saw in one of the season 16 trailers just a few days before Sunday night’s premiere. But how long will the show be dedicated to focusing on the good times in this relationship? This is not going to be an easy season for Kardashian, who arguably has the most tumultuous arc in her family this season. We may know about the fallout from Kardashian and Thompson’s relationship breakdown, but as viewers watch how the turmoil begins, hopefully Kardashian is shown and treated sympathetically, if only because what’s about to happen to her is going to be rough, rough, rough.
Keeping Up With the Kardashians airs Sundays at 9/8c on E!.
