There are just about as many rumored Game of Thrones spinoffs as there are actual Law & Order off-shoots, so what’s one more? With GoT’s Kit Harington at the helm, Saturday Night Live proposed Game of Thrones: Special Victims Unit — and it’s the show we never knew we needed until right now. With GoT’s final season premiering in a week and Saturday being Harington’s first time hosting SNL, it wasn’t a huge surprise to see HBO’s fantasy drama name-dropped. But bringing SVU into the mix? That was an unexpected stroke of genius.
SVU’s longtime stars Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T — who play Olivia Benson and Fin Tutuola, respectively — even made a cameo to introduce this extra special GoT spinoff. Hilariously, their segment involved the typically tough-as-nails Tutuola battling disbelief over the utter depravity that goes on at the bottom of Rhaenys Hill. “You’re telling me some sick son of a bitch cut some dude’s thang off and fed it to his dog? And gouged the man’s eyes out. Then fed him his own eyes. Then wore his dead skin to an orgy. Then got busy in the holes where his eyes used to be?!” In response, Benson keeps it short and comically cryptic, quipping, “The circle gets the square.”
It goes without saying that GoT: SVU needs to be a real thing, stat. But it does have some competition in the realm of fictitious “prequels, sequels, and spinoffs.” SNL actually proposed a veritable slew of show ideas, and SVU wasn’t the only standout. Castle Black, a Riverdale spinoff, would see Jon Snow work through relationship issues with a White Walker in a “sexy, moody drama about forbidden love.” Fans of the iconic snarky ‘90s animated series Daria would undoubtedly tune into Arya, based on everyone’s “favorite angry assassin” Arya Stark. Or perhaps you’re partial to the Sex and the City-inspired Cersei in the City, or The Marvelous Mrs. Melisandre (just sub Carice van Houten for Rachel Brosnahan).
Still, we’re admittedly partial to the SVU idea — a version produced fittingly by “Dire Wolf.” The real-life version recently made history when it was picked up for a record-breaking 21st season, making it the longest-running live-action, primetime series in TV history. Bonus? That renewal also made Hargitay the longest-running female character in a primetime, live-action series.
So, sure, Westeros deals with its fair share of terrifying villains, including violent sexual offenders. But that’s exactly why they need a proven badass like Olivia Benson on the scene.
