Did Gwendoline Christie Just Confirm the Latest GOT Episode Was Brienne’s Swan Song?

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Game of Thrones season eight, episode two.

There are only four episodes of Game of Thrones left, and so far, we haven’t had a single major death this season. That can only mean one thing: starting next week, fan favorites will be dropping like flies — and some fear that Lady (I mean, Ser) Brienne of Tarth is up first.

Brienne, played by Gwendoline Christie, is an obvious candidate to die this season: as leader of the left flank, she’ll be on the front lines of battle. Furthermore, she’s sworn to protect Sansa Stark, and we don’t doubt she would put her life on the line to do so. (We suspect she’d do the same for Jaime Lannister, but that’s neither here nor there.) She’s also exactly the kind of noble, pure-hearted hero who it would devastate GoT fans to lose — in other words, exactly the kind of character the HBO series loves to kill off.

The season’s second episode went a little too well for Brienne of Tarth, leading fans to wonder whether her plot line was being wrapped up. After stepping forward to secure Jaime’s welcome at Winterfell, the Lannister paid his debts: by finally making Brienne a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. As Twitter user @melly_mel sums up: “Brienne fulfilling her oath AND becoming a knight?! She’s accomplished everything and doesn’t do happy endings soo.”

Christie herself seemed to be fanning the flames with a recent Instagram post. “OH MY POD!” Christie captions a photo with Daniel Portman, who plays her squire Podrick. “Spending the last five seasons with the absolutely wonderfully talented Daniel Podrick Portmanteau has been a POD-SEND! I love you and I miss you and I can’t wait to watch you bloom through the rest of your career! IF YOU WERE A BAG, YOU’D BE A BAG-FOR-LIFE.”

This certainly seems to be a goodbye post, and it’s troubling that it’s coming so soon into season 8. Given that the White Walkers will reach Winterfell by morning, we know to expect big losses in next week’s episode. Judging from episode 2, and this rather cryptic post, we suspect that Brienne of Tarth might not survive the first battle. For that matter, we think Podrick’s days are looking a little numbered too.
