If you consume any pop culture at all, you’ve undoubtedly been inundated with headlines about the cost of Adele’s impending divorce from Simon Konecki. What could it mean for the global superstar’s reported $182 million net worth? With rumors ranging from a 50-50 split of assets to a legal claim that may let Adele keep most of her earnings, there’s a lot of speculation over how big of a hit Adele’s bank account will take in the divorce proceedings. But at this point, it’s important to remember that speculation is just that: speculative.
This may seem like a strange (read: insensitive) topic of discussion amid what is surely a difficult time for Adele. However, it isn’t very often that a celebrity with such a large estate splits without — as many U.K. outlets are suggesting — a prenup. So, it’s not altogether surprising for fans to wonder how separations with such massive financial stakes are handled. Also not surprising? That experts are weighing in with differing opinions.
Sandra Davis, a divorce attorney who represented Princess Diana, told the U.K. Times, “What is made during the marriage is likely to be split on an equal basis. It doesn’t matter who did what, or who contributed what.” But Suzanne Kingston, a family law specialist, says that Adele could walk away with the majority of what she’s earned since she married Konecki in 2016. “Adele may be able to claim that her talent is effectively genius, which means her husband would be entitled to significantly less,” she told the Times.

According to the U.K.’s Sun, the former couple allegedly split in secret last year and has been tying up loose ends in 2019. In January, the singer reportedly transferred ownership of a house in L.A. to Konecki. Then, in February, the Sun reported that the couple sold their multi-million-dollar U.K. home. Per People, Adele boasts an impressive portfolio of properties outside of those two alone. Adele’s other assets obviously include proceeds from her music and touring.
Ultimately, how Adele and Konecki — who share son Angelo, 6 — will handle their divorce and the separation of assets remains to be seen. What is less of a mystery, though, is that the most supportive things fans can do is be respectful during this time and mindful of Adele’s wishes. The estranged couple has always been fiercely private. Adele has always made family a priority, and that includes keeping hers out of the limelight as much as possible. And she also isn’t a celebrity who often discusses money, other than to make a point of saying it isn’t a top value for her. “I don’t come from money,” she told Vanity Fair in 2016. “It’s not that important a part of my life.”
