Serena Williams Admits That Hosting Meghan Markle’s Baby Shower Was ‘A Lot’

Can you imagine the pressure that must come with throwing a royal baby shower? Serena Williams can! In an interview with Business of Fashion published on Tuesday (via People), the tennis icon discussed what it took to host Meghan Markle’s baby shower back in February. And, spoiler alert, it sounds like it was a big responsibility.

Admittedly, the pressure was perhaps even greater for Williams because this is Meghan and Prince Harry’s first child. Well, that — and the fact that Williams is a self-professed stickler. “Planning something like that takes a lot of effort,” Williams reportedly told the publication shortly after the shower. “I’m a perfectionist, so I’m like, ‘Let’s make it perfect.’” When all was said and done, Williams told Business of Fashion, “It’s been a lot the last few days.”

From the outside looking in, though, we’d say Williams’ hard work was all worth it. The happy event was held at The Mark Hotel and attended by such high-profile pals as Abigail Spencer, Amal Clooney, Gayle King, Jessica Mulroney and Misha Nonoo. Per People, the women enjoyed a flower-arranging class and plenty of delicious food, too.

Later in the evening, Meghan and Williams were joined by Mulroney and mutual pal Markus Anderson for an upscale dinner at Ralph Lauren’s The Polo Bar restaurant.

Sound like a wonderful bash thrown by a wonderful friend to us. It’s little wonder Williams was willing to go to such great lengths to ensure Meghan had a fantastic experience — according to E! News, the pair have been super-close since the day they met at DirectTV’s Celebrity Beach Bowl in February 2014. “We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting about not tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girly stuff,” Meghan wrote of Williams on her now-defunct blog, The Tig. “So began our friendship.”

In the time since, Meghan has cheered Williams on at numerous tennis events, attended Williams’ wedding to Alexis Ohanian and helped welcome Williams’ daughter Olympia. And Williams has been there for Meghan through her royal courtship and marriage to Harry. She has also offered Meghan everything from clothing from her eponymous clothing line to advice on becoming a first-time mom.

The two often gush about each other, too. On The Tig, Meghan referred to Serena as one of her closest friends and a true “confidante.” And earlier this month, while chatting with E! News, Serena insisted of her royal BFF, “She’ll be the best mom, for sure.”
