On May 16, the final episode of The Big Bang Theory will air, but fans will want to stick around even after the lights dim for the last time. CBS announced on Monday that a Big Bang Theory farewell special is on the schedule. Better yet, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki, who play Penny and Leonard in the comedy, will serve as hosts.
According to TVLine, the special will be a 30-minute retrospective titled Unraveling the Mystery: A Big Bang Farewell and will air at 9:30 p.m. following not only the hour-long TBBT series finale (8-9 p.m.), but also the Young Sheldon season two finale (9-9:30 p.m.).
CBS revealed that hosts Galecki and Cuoco will “lead fans on a trip down memory lane, sharing some of the best-kept backstage secrets and personal memories from the past 12 years. They will reveal their favorite moments playing beloved characters Leonard and Penny, and revisit some of the most memorable stories from The Big Bang Theory Stage.” Fans will also watch clips and interviews and will even be given a tour of the sets, including Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment.
If that isn’t enough, on May 16, the cast will also appear on TheLate Show With Stephen Colbert, so fans will have multiple opportunities to say goodbye.

Saying an official goodbye to Penny, Leonard, Sheldon, Amy, Howard, Bernadette, Raj and every other character who has made the show so special certainly isn’t going to be easy. They have yet to film their last episode, but the cast recently had their final table read ever for the series finale and based on the photos, well, it was a rough one.
As you can see above, Cuoco was definitely upset following the table read and captioned an Instagram of her final script covered in used tissues, “Prepare yourselves … for a finale that has truly given me a loss for words. Our whole universe.” Galecki felt the same way as his costar and onscreen wife. Next to an image of himself bent over wiping away tears, he wrote, “This morning was not an easy one. The final table reading for @bigbangtheory_cbs So very sad. So very grateful.”

If this is how distraught they were after the final table read, just imagine how they will be not only while filming their last episode, but when they wrap once and for all. These final moments are understandably emotional for a group of actors and actresses who have been working together for years. The retrospective will certainly be a nice way to say goodbye to TBBT, all while giving fans even more memories of the comedy.
