Cersei’s death on Game of Thrones is all but explicitly confirmed at this point in the eighth and final season. The last lady Lannister has a whole lot of comeuppance coming her way and with GoT officially past the books in terms of plot, it’s really anyone’s guess as to who will kill Cersei. With this in mind, we ask you this: What if Sansa killed off Cersei on GoT? Stranger things have happened on this show, so consider us all ears on how this shakes out.
As previously mentioned, Cersei’s death is very nearly set in stone. Part of the Valonqar Prophecy told to Cersei when she was a child by fortune teller Maggy the Frog was the fact that, as it says in the title, the “valonqar” (High Valyrian for “little brother” although High Valyrian doesn’t use gendered words) would kill her. Theories abound as to who that little brother would be, since her own brothers, Jaime and Tyrion Lannister, both fit the bill. As the show progressed, those theories have grown with fans also pegging Arya as Cersei’s possible killer as well as The Hound, seeing as he’s a little brother and he’s always in the mood for bloodshed.
But now that GoT has fully veered away from George R.R. Martin’s source material, we’re starting to wonder if Cersei’s killer isn’t just a younger sibling, but also a character who has lived and learned from Cersei’s triumphs as well as her mistakes: Sansa Stark.
Elite Daily suggests Sansa could be the one to kill off Cersei for the primary reason that Sansa knows and understands Cersei all too well. Tyrion may know how to think like a Lannister, Jaime might be able to lure her into a vulnerable position and Arya is filled with such a burning desire for revenge against Cersei that it’s radiating from her, but when cool and logical heads need to prevail in the same way as Cersei, it’s Sansa who comes out on top. Sansa has lived with Cersei and in Cersei’s shadow since season one, first aspiring to be like her before quickly realizing she’s one cruel mother who is worth studying. You could even argue that Sansa’s current position as Lady of Winterfell was partly achieved by what she learned watching Cersei manipulate men to get the power she so desired and take out any enemy who stood in her way without lifting a finger. Sansa is Cersei 2.0 but with a better moral compass, making her the kind of person who would be able to get in a room with Cersei and kill her before Cersei ever knew what hit her.
Listen, in the world of White Walkers, giant wolf dogs and ageless witches who can conjure fire with a few words, the idea the Sansa will kill Cersei on GoT‘s final season is the least bananas thing we’ve heard all day; it could really happen.
