Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively’s Parenting Hack is Not Working at the Same Time

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have a knack for making the impossible look easy — both onscreen and off. Most recently, the impressive feat they’re pulling off is juggling two movie stars’ schedules while also spending plenty of time with their daughters: James, age 4, and Inez, age 2. Their trick? Reynolds reveals that he and Lively won’t work at the same time, so the family can travel together.

Speaking to People, Reynolds talked about the importance of spending time as a family, and admitted that the constant travel required for their work can take a toll. “Blake and I don’t do movies at the same time,” he shared. “If she is doing a movie in Thailand and I am doing a movie in Vancouver we would just never see each other.” Beyond the logistical difficulty in seeing each other, it’s important to Reynolds and Lively that all four members of the family be in the same place. “We operate as a unit, and that works really well for us,” says Reynolds. “The kids stay with us, and the family stays together, and that is where home is. So if we are in Spain or Utah or New York, as long as we are together, we’re home.”

In classic Reynolds fashion, however, he can’t resist making a joke about this ultra-sweet family dynamic. Lots of traveling together means lots of plane time — and like any parent, Reynolds has his limits. “Usually when I’m on an airplane with my kids, at some point I get up and ask the flight attendants if I can leave the aircraft,” Reynolds quips. “99 percent of the time they say, ‘No, please stay seated!’ So I just sit back down and long for the sweet release of death.” We feel your pain, Ryan — and don’t worry, it gets better.
