After everything Tristan Thompson has put her through this year, no one would have blamed Khloé Kardashian for excluding him from a few major life events — up to and including True’s first birthday. But the 34-year-old mother surprised everyone by not only welcoming Thompson to the party, but insisting she “[wants] him to be there.” On Laura Wasser’s podcast Divorce Sucks, Kardashian opened up about the co-parenting relationship she hopes to build with Thompson, and how that first encounter at True’s birthday really went.

Kardashian doesn’t sugarcoat it: things are still a little rough between her and Thompson. “Tristan and I broke up not too long ago so it’s really raw,” she tells Wasser. And even though True is only a little over a year old, Kardashian is worried about her daughter picking up on that tension. “She doesn’t really know what’s happening, but […] she feels energy,” the reality star confides. “I do everything in my power to not put […] any sort of heavy energy around her.”
That includes at True’s birthday party, which sounds like it went…fine, if not great. Kardashian explains her reasoning for inviting Thompson like this: “I know her dad is a great person, I know how much he loves her and cares about her, so I want him to be there.” As for how she enjoyed that particular experience, Kardashian keeps things brief: “It was civilized and we did it.”
Judging from Thompson’s Instagram, it definitely seems like he appreciated the invite and was thrilled to spend time with his daughter. It’s impressive that Kardashian can be so civil and put her daughter’s needs first given the nature of their break-up, but hey, maybe that’s what growing up in the spotlight trains you to do — act okay even when you’re really not. Let’s hope Thompson can handle their co-parenting with equal grace, and maybe even show some remorse for how he’s treated Kardashian, à la Lamar Odom (though hopefully, it won’t take six years).
