‘Country Rebel’ Kacey Musgraves Annihilates Alabama Senators in Scorching Tweet About Abortion Law

Kacey Musgraves is not your typical country star. When it comes to her music, she’s made it clear that she won’t bow to genre expectations — and that goes double for her politics. Early this morning, Musgraves took to Twitter and fired off a scathing quip directed at Alabama senators, who recently passed the most restrictive abortion ban in the country. The singer’s pro-choice stance, and willingness to speak out about the issue, is a shocking departure from the typical approach of other country musicians — but so far, her fans have been nothing but supportive.

In her inflammatory tweet, Musgraves pairs a GIF of Saturday Night Live‘s Kenan Thompson with the following question: “Sooo what’s gonna happen when one of those Alabama senators knocks up one of his mistresses?” The implication, of course, is that these senators are anti-abortion only until they would benefit personally from the procedure — a hypocrisy that’s particularly galling in wake of recent events. The tweet serves as a direct response to the Alabama legislature passed earlier this week banning all abortion, with no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

Responses to Musgraves’ tweet have praised the Grammy winner for her candor and bravery in speaking out. “You use your platform so beautifully,” @spaceytour gushes. “You never fail to ask the real questions,” @hsprfct adds.

Any celebrity who uses their platform to speak out about important issues is doing a service for the people of this country — but when it comes from a country singer, it holds even more weight. When the Dixie Chicks spoke out against George W. Bush back in 2003, the backlash was swift and severe: songs banned from country radio, boycotted shows, and death threats were all leveled against the country trio. Today, country singers are still expected to espouse the conservative views of their primary audience, or to keep quiet if they don’t. In that context, it speaks volumes that Musgraves was willing to speak up about abortion, one of the nation’s most hotly-contested issues, and that she did so while taking a thoroughly liberal stance. This issue, for Musgraves, is too important to ignore — and important enough to risk alienating some not-so-like-minded fans.
