[Warning: This article is dark and full of Game of Thrones season eight spoilers.]
‘Tis done, friends. After 73 episodes and nearly a decade, Game of Thrones came to an end on Sunday night. And during that dramatic finale, Jon Snow killed his aunt-slash-sometimes-lover after he (and nearly everyone around him) realizes she is a merciless leader who must be stopped. But is that the end of her story, really? Where did Drogon take Dany when he gently scooped up her lifeless body and flew away? Inquiring minds need to know what truly became of the Mother of Dragons.
In case you managed to mentally block out the gut-wrenching moment already, here’s a quick recap. Dany set King’s Landing ablaze in the penultimate episode of the season, massacring men, women and many innocent children. Those around her, including her loyal advisor Tyrion, realize she has gone full Mad Queen. She is a danger to humanity as they know it. And so, begrudgingly, Jon confronts her. She makes it clear she doesn’t believe in mercy for Tyrion or basically anyone else at this point. But she wants Jon to build this apparently fear-driven new world with her, so they kiss. Only, during that passionate embrace, Jon plunges a dagger through her heart. Ouch, in more ways than one.
Enter, Drogon.

While it seems for a moment as though Drogon is going to take out Jon, he surprisingly doesn’t. Seeing his mother is dead, the dragon spews fire, ultimately melting the Iron Throne — the thing that was really to blame for Dany’s downfall. Then, he gently picks Dany up with his rear talon and flies away. But, like, where? And why?
To be honest, your guess is as good as ours. Thanks to a meeting of King Bran’s small council, we do know that Drogon was last spotted flying east. However, Bronn cuts Sam off, so we don’t get to hear precisely where they were headed. We also know that there seems to be some significance to whatever Drogon did with Dany, because Bran offers to track the dragon down. He does have that whole Three-Eyed Raven psychic ability thing going for him, after all.

It’s possible Drogon was simply taking Dany away to protect her body and mourn the loss. Or maybe he was taking her to where he and his siblings hatched, where Khal Drogo died. Perhaps the dragon knows of a way to bring Dany back to life (hey, anything’s possible in this realm). But seeing as this was supposedly the final episode of GoT, we’re going to need George R.R. Martin or one of the series writers to make this make sense for us, STAT.
