When it comes to vocal prowess, Céline Dion is unmatched. She can transform any song into a thing of beauty and make it feel like you’re hearing something for the first time. So, color me very surprised when Dion sang “Baby Shark” during the latest “Carpool Karaoke” segment on The Late, Late Show with James Corden and not only made the earworm palatable but actually epic, too?! Seriously, Dion brings so much drama and beauty to her rendition of “Baby Shark” that you’ll want to give her at least 10 more Grammys for her performance.
Honestly, we should put Dion’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment on a loop in the Louvre because it is high art. From the minute Corden picks her up in Las Vegas, where she is currently finishing out a Caeser’s Palace residency before moving on to new ventures, the good times were palpable. Dion casually sings a little bit of Rihanna’s “Work” before Corden turns on her song, “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” As the instrumental plays, Dion mugs and makes googly eyes before diving into the song like the damn pro that she is. Her comedy skills are on point and she’s never sounded better.
But the pièce de résistance is Dion turning the silly little children’s ditty “Baby Shark” into something so dramatic and intense, you’ll think it was meant for a rock concert full of headbangers. Corden had to take a second to teach her the ultra-complex and intricate (jk, jk) lyrics, but then Dion was off to the races. She totally got into it, pumping her fist, leaning into each word and giving it heft. It was magical, it was dramatic, it made me actually like “Baby Shark” for the first time in my life.
Other incredible highlights that confirm this “Carpool Karaoke” episode is unlike any other included Dion and Corden recreating the memorable Titanic “I’m Flying” scene as they sang “My Heart Will Go On” and giving away some of Dion’s shoes, part of a reportedly massive shoe collection the songstress holds near and dear to her. Every second of Dion and Corden either singing or joking around during the 14-minute segment is just a thing of beauty and you need to watch it ASAP.
