It’s only been two weeks since Amy Schumer gave birth to her first child, but she’s back in action! The new mama took the stage on Monday night to perform a comedy set at New York City’s iconic Comedy Cellar, and Schumer’s already catching flak from mom-shamers about her decision to return to work so soon. She seems to be taking it all in stride, though, even mustering up a joke about the unsolicited feedback from fellow mothers.
So, ICYMI, Schumer and her husband Chris Fischer welcomed son Gene Attell Fischer into the world on May 5. And, ICYBAMLM (in case you’re bad at math like me), that means she got back into the swing of things career-wise precisely 15 days after childbirth. Schumer marked the occasion on Instagram, sharing a photo from her set taken by fellow comedian Jon Laster. “Pic from tonight by @hewasfunny,” she captioned the snapshot. “I’m back!” Understandably, many people — several of Schumer’s famous friends included — were impressed by the comedian’s quick bounce-back. Wrote fellow actress-slash-comedian Ali Wentworth, “WHAAA???? YOU ARE A WARRIOR!” Professor and author Emily Oster gushed, “You are a rock star. I bet it felt amazing to be back up there.”
But, disappointingly, there were also those who felt compelled to shame Schumer for returning to work. “Ugh why are you working so soon?!” one commenter wrote. Another joked, “Like, I can still smell your placenta. Take a damn break FFS.” The last laugh’s on the haters, though. When writer Molly McNearney (aka Jimmy Kimmel’s wife) said, “Here comes the mom shaming… ughhhhhhhhhhh,” Schumer didn’t miss a beat. “I’ve always wanted to be mom-shamed!!!!” she quipped.

Besides, there are many reasons that shaming Schumer for going back to work is, in fact, laughable. To state the obvious, a woman’s body is her own — what she chooses to do with it should be her business. Then there’s the fact that, although Schumer was very transparent throughout her pregnancy about the experience, we aren’t privy to every part of her motherhood journey. This comedy set could have been one isolated night off, in what likely feels like a sea of sleepless nights as a breastfeeding-slash-pumping mombie.

A few hours away from baby does not a negligent mom make. It merits mentioning that Schumer canceled her comedy tour during her pregnancy out of concern for her well-being as well as baby Gene’s.
And, as another commenter pointed out, not everyone has the luxury to solely rest after giving birth. “What rest? Are you kidding me? I had nobody to clean and cook for me, go grocery shopping, to take my kids to school, to activities, etc. Three kids, one of them a newborn. That’s life,” the fellow mom wrote. “You just put on your cape and do what you have to do. Besides, work helps with postpartum depression, too. Amy, you’re amazing. Rock on.”
We’re inclined to agree. Keep being the badass mama you are, Schumer. We look forward to seeing more baby picturesand snapshots from your killer career in the near future.
