William H. Macy is Being Dragged For Celebrating Daughter’s Graduation Amid College Scandal

On May 13, Felicity Huffman appeared in federal court and pled guilty to charges of fraud and conspiracy in connection with the college admissions scandal. And on May 30, husband William H. Macy stepped out to buy a handful of congratulatory balloons reading “you did it” and “congrats grad,” in celebration of their daughter’s high school graduation. The irony of this has not been lost on Twitter users everywhere, who are hailing the photos of Macy with these balloons as “performance art” and “photo of the day,” as well as commenting how Huffman’s involvement in the college scam “won’t stop” them from celebrating. While the photo itself is definitely amusing, let’s not lose sight of what’s really happening here: a father trying to make the best of a bad situation and celebrate his 18-year-old daughter’s big day like everything’s normal. Given that her mother could be facing jail time, is that really something we want to attack?

Macy and Huffman’s daughter, Sofia Grace, is graduating from Los Angeles County High School. Since news of the college admissions scandal broke back in March, Huffman has been at the center of an onslaught of media attention for her involvement. In court, a tearful Huffman admitted to paying William “Rick” Singer $15,000 to boost Sofia’s SAT scores. “I am in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, I accept full responsibility for my actions,” Huffman wrote in a statement this past April, adding: “I want to apologize to the students who work hard every day to get into college, and to their parents who make tremendous sacrifices to support their children and do so honestly. My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her.”

Macy has not been charged with any crimes. Huffman is expected to receive her sentence in September, with the expectation that she will receive a few months in jail, plus probation and some hefty fines. Until then, let’s hope Sofia Grace can have as normal a childhood as possible.
