It’s been an eternity of waiting, but finally — finally! — the second season of Big Little Lies is almost here, just in time for a delicious, drama-filled summer. While that’s all well-and-good, we’d be lying if we we weren’t a little anxious about the Big Little Lies season 2 questions we have. The obvious reason, of course, is that season one was phenomenal, and we’re praying to the TV gods that the upcoming installment will live up to the hype. TBH, though, we’re not too worried on that front since Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are co-executive producers. Our heightened level of nervous anticipation is rooted in loose ends.
While BLL did a great job of addressing most issues by the time season one finale rolled around, a few unanswered questions remain. And so, here we sit and wait. And wonder. Will the second season satisfy our curiosity? We’ll find out come June 9.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of these nagging loose ends.
Will Madeline ever come clean to poor Ed?
Oh, Ed. We love you, buddy! Sadly, Madeline’s hubby (played by the always adorable Adam Scott) doesn’t get nearly enough credit in the often pretentious and surprisingly cut-throat world of Monterey. And this includes Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) cheating on him with the local theater director. She never tells him about the affair, but does he figure it out? Or does she ever clue him in? Ed deserves to know the truth, right?
Is Madeline seriously still seeing Joseph?
Ugh, Madeline — can you not just keep it in your pants around Joseph? She’s got a fantastic, doting husband who worships the very ground she walks on. So, what’s she doing with this chump? Since the finale implied that he was still in love with her (and a season two teaser trailer shows them sharing a passionate kiss), it stands to reason that Madeline might still be tangled up with her not-husband. And since it seems like Joseph’s wife, Tori, knows who her husband’s mistress is, this will likely get messy.
Are the kids OK? Really?
The kids of the Monterey Five have weathered their fair share of melodrama, pain and psychological upheaval. One big loose end that remains after Big Little Lies’ season one is how the newfound revelation that Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) fathered Ziggy will affect the boy — if Jane even tells him. It’s complicated, obviously, since Perry attacked Jane (Shailene Woodley). It’s also made tricky by the fact that Perry’s twin sons with Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Max and Josh, don’t understand that part of their recently deceased father. Will Ziggy come to learn that they are his half-brothers? And, if so, will their relationship change?
Then there is Amabella. In season one, she was being hurt by a little boy at school, and her mother — Renata (Laura Dern) — was quick to blame it all on Ziggy. However, it eventually came out that Max had been responsible (like father, like son?). In the season two preview, Amabella and Max seem like BFFs. Did their parents address this issue? Is Max getting help? Hopefully, the answer is yes on both counts.
How long had Perry been such a monster?
One of the most exciting announcements to come from season two has been the addition of Meryl Streep as Perry’s mother, Mary Louise Wright. It’s clear from the teaser trailers that she is hellbent on finding out the truth about her son’s death, so we’re going to go ahead and assume her presence means BLL will do a flashback treatment of her relationship with her late son. This seems particularly likely given the fact that Nicole Kidman inadvertently revealed Alexander Skarsgard would be back for the second season.
Will Jane find love?
Well, this isn’t so much a loose end as it is a personal request. We want to see more of Jane’s cute coffee shop flirtation! She was understandably too hesitant in season one to really open herself up to love. But will her sort-of crush Tom be in the second season, and, if so, is Jane ready to get serious? At the very least, we’d like to see more cute coffee shop banter.
Why didn’t the women just fess up?
Correct us if we’re wrong, scholarly law types of the world, but wouldn’t the women have an easy self-defense plea to fall back on? Perry did attack them. It wasn’t premeditated. The detective snooping around the town at the end of last season made the off-the-cuff comment that Celeste would likely only get a few months of community service if she was charged. Is it different because Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) was ultimately the one who killed Perry? Did the women simply panic out of fear the cops wouldn’t believe them?
Will Chloe be serving up more required listening?
If we’re really being honest, this is the most pressing question. Madeline’s daughter Chloe (Darby Camp) basically soundtracked the entire first season with her iPod, and the kid has killer taste in music. More of that, please!
