Reese Witherspoon & Kerry Washington Gave a First Look at Little Fires Everywhere & We’re ready

By the power of all that is good and iconic, we have been graced with a sneak peek at the upcoming book-to-TV adaptation of Celeste Ng’s acclaimed novel, Little Fires Everywhere. On Tuesday, series leads Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington teased their Little Fires Everywhere characters on their respective Instagrams. Both women are serving up chic ’90s suburban mom realness, further whetting our appetite to see these two TV heavy-hitters come together onscreen for the first time.

Witherspoon was the first to share the photo of her Little Fires character, Elena Richardson, standing at a kitchen table with Washington’s character, Mia Warren. Both actresses sport understated ’90s-appropriate outfits, telegraphing the kinds of women they are going to be playing on the show. Witherspoon’s Elena looks like the nicer version of Big Little Lies’ Madeline Martha McKenzie, outfitted in a denim dress and red heels. Meanwhile, Washington’s Mia is nothing but tough, wearing all black and chunky-heeled boots to match.

“Bringing it back to the ’90s! Meet Mia Warren and Elena Richardson. So excited to be shooting @LittleFiresHulu with the incredibly talented @kerrywashington!” Witherspoon captioned the preview. Washington posted the same photo on her Instagram, similarly writing, “Yup. The [fire emoji] just got LIT at @LittleFiresHulu. Meet Elena Richardson and Mia Warren. #LittleFiresEverywhere.”

Coming to Hulu in 2020, the television adaptation of Ng’s breakout novel in the hands of TV pros Witherspoon and Washington is undoubtedly going to be must-binge TV. Per Amazon’s description of Little Fires, we cannot wait to see how Witherspoon and Washington do as Mia and Elena:

“Mia Warren—an enigmatic artist and single mother— [who] arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town—and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides.  Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia’s past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.”

The Little Fires official logline teases all of the drama that will unfold over the course of eight episodes: “The story explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, the ferocious pull of motherhood — and the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster.”

We are beyond ready for this TV series to come to life. 2020 can’t come soon enough.
