Another day, another celebrity mom being shamed. Hilary Duff was mom-shamed for how she breastfed her daughter, Banks. The Younger actress gave birth to her daughter, Banks Violet Bair, on October 25, 2018. By March, she was back on the set of the TV Land series for its sixth season. For fans who watch the show, seeing Duff run around New York City in the stylish ensembles and high heels of her character Kelsey Peters would be grueling for anyone. But five-months postpartum, Duff made it happen with season 6 of Younger premiering last night.
“Coming back from work so soon after having a baby is so hard, and I think women are the strongest working people out there,” Duff told Glamour. Given intricacies of a healthy work-life balance, Duff had a slew of logistics to work through, between long work days on set and making her newborn a priority. “I’m still nursing Banks. I’m getting to the tail end of like, ‘I can’t do this anymore, something’s gotta give!’ Pumping at work, bringing her to a nursing session, and juggling our 16-hour days. It’s f—ing crazy.”

Duff has made her experience as a working mother a staple of her social media. Particularly on her Instagram, the actress and singer has been known to share paragraphs of stories detailing her experience with breastfeeding, pumping and her difficult pregnancy leading to baby Banks’s birth. While many women can relate to Duff’s experience with motherhood (and how the actress is shutting down stigmas relating to it), not everyone is a fan.
“I just saw a comment on my Instagram that was like, ‘Were you feeding your child solids while she was laying down?'” Duff shared with Glamour. “I’m like, You know what, I’m going to feed my daughter how I want to feed my daughter. And if that’s laying down, or hanging upside down because it works for her, we’re gonna do it.” This is just a sample of the criticism Duff has faced. In a previous post, Duff was criticized by a slew of commenters for kissing her 3-year-old son Luca on the lips.
But instead of taking on the haters, Duff has taken the high road and left the commenters for her supportive friends who offer their fair amount of clap-backs. Regardless of the opinions Duff’s commenters, the singer has made it clear she’s doing motherhood her way and using her platform for something so much greater than a cute, filtered photo.
