Short Big Little Lies Fans Are Having a Field Day After This Iconic Line

ICYMI, Big Little Lies is two episodes into its second season, and it’s already fire. Not only that, but the show has given a certain subset of its audience a new hero — Big Little Lies‘ short fans are having a moment, thanks to Madeline (Reese Witherspoon). The woman might be short in stature, but what she lacks in height, she makes up for in sass. That much was made abundantly clear in this week’s foray into the world of the Monterey Five.

To fully appreciate why short fans have taken Twitter by storm this week, though, we need to bop back to last week’s season two premiere. In the episode, Madeline and Celeste (Nicole Kidman) stop at a local coffee shop, where they run into Celeste’s meddling mother-in-law, Mary Louise (Meryl Streep). As is Mary Louise’s way, she wastes no time delivering one of those “is she being awfully nice or just awful?” lines to Madeline. “You’re very short. I don’t mean it in a negative way. I find little people to be untrustworthy,” she tells Madeline.

Like, what even is that, right? But BLL wasn’t going to let it go down like that. Instead, the show turned Madeline into a champion for her people — and by her people, we clearly mean the shorties of the world. In this week’s episode, after Madeline tells Mary Louise that she needed Celeste’s help with an emergency, Mary Louise presses, “What kind of an emergency?” To which Madeline delivers an iconic barb: “The kind short people have.”

Witherspoon herself took to Twitter to deem the line her “new favorite excuse.”

And just like that, short people everywhere felt so seen.

Oh, Madeline — serve it, sister.

Considering how much drama is already brewing this season, we can’t imagine she’ll be slowing down with the short-lady sass anytime soon. And praise the HBO gods for that. She’ll likely need every tool in her arsenal to fend off the constant jabs from Mary Louise, because we all know that short-people-shader isn’t going anywhere until she gets to the bottom of her son’s death. She obviously doesn’t understand the power of a short person’s rage, and we can’t wait to watch Madeline introduce it to her fully (sorry, Meryl… we still love you).
