Game of Thronesmay no longer be airing, but the post-show conversation is far from dying down. Of the many questions left unanswered, the most pressing may be what became of Drogon — and where exactly he was going with that body. The Game of Thrones theory that Drogon ate Daenerys in the season 8 finale was always hard to swallow (no pun intended), but a forensic expert just confirmed to Huffington Post that it could be true.
According to Dr. Carolyn Rando, a forensic anthropologist at the University Collgege London Institute of Archaeology, Drogon eating Dany is a real possibility. “Might he eat her? Possibly yes,” she told Huff Post. “I don’t think we can discount that he was going off to eat her.” Rando said that pets eating their deceased owners “probably happens more than we think,” but notes that this only happens in “very specific conditions,” like when a pet is trapped in a house with no food for extended periods of time (à la Ramsay Bolton).
While it certainly doesn’t sound great, pets eating their owners is also not quite as sinister as we think. Rando describes a scenario in which bite marks were found on a dead owner’s face, which she said was likely the dog trying to greet their owner and see if they were OK. When an animal checks on their owner like that, Rando explaied, “it tends to lick, […] and then eating might happen, but more out of just stress or something like that.” If anything, the animal might bite its owner as one of many “attention getting behaviors” (like when Drogon nudges Dany with his nose).
So do we think Drogon ate the body

Drogon flew off so he could eat the body in peace. I hope we can all agree about this. #got

Given what we’ve seen of Drogon’s nature, Rando thinks another explanation is possible for the dragon’s behavior: grief. “It seems like the dragons in the show have some sort of semblance of understanding of human behavior a little bit,” she remarked, adding that Dany’s longstanding relationship with Drogon makes a difference. “The first thing [the dragons] would have seen was her. So I think that imprinting is really strong,” Rando explained. “They see her as a parent. So it was a grief type of thing.”
We can all agree that what Drogon expressed upon discovering Dany’s body was grief. Maybe it’s not so important what happened after. Dragons will be dragons, and Dany’s memory will live on either way.
