Jada Pinkett Almost Didn’t Marry Will Smith & We Don’t Want to Believe It

Can you even fathom a world where power couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith aren’t together? Well in People’s most recent cover story, readers are finding out why Jada Pinkett Smith almost didn’t marry Will Smith. The couple marks 22 years of marriage this year — they tied the knot on New Year’s Eve in 1997 — but, as Pinkett reveals, wasn’t always sure about the decision.

The couple, who had been dating since 1995, were in love but had to decide seriously on the topic of marriage upon discovering that Pinkett was pregnant with son Jaden, now 21. As Pinkett told People, “I never wanted to get married. I had never seen a happy marriage.” Instead it was Pinkett’s mother, Adrienne, who forced the issue. “My mother was like, ‘You have to get married’ – she’s so old school,” said Pinkett. Thankfully Smith himself also wanted to take the plunge, and the two moved forward with their marriage, in spite of Pinkett’s morning sickness.

Looking back, the actress has no regrets about the marriage, despite the fact the couple still doesn’t label themselves as married. Pinkett explained that, “It’s more of a life partnership… I don’t own him. He doesn’t own me. He has to be his own person first, and vice versa… Love is freedom.”

It’s great to hear the couple remain just as committed to honoring their own individuality as they are to their relationship. Most recently, Will Smith asked Pinkett to take another plunge — this time skydiving for his birthday. And the actress has been incredibly open and expressive with her own children, from discussing porn and to urging them to love themselves. The Smiths are showing a progressive way to be married while avoiding the social stigma of what that often means. The Smiths are anything but conventional.
