The Trailer for Mindy Kaling’s Four Weddings & a Funeral Remake Will Make You Swoon

In 1994, audiences swooned, laughed, and cried with Richard Curtis’s romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral. And with ’90s nostalgia continuing to boom, Mindy Kaling has taken on a remake, releasing the first trailer for Hulu‘s Four Weddings and a Funeral remake.

Much like the original feature, which starred Hugh Grant, Kristin Scott Thomas and Andie McDowall, Four Weddings follows Maya (played by Game of Thrones‘ Nathalie Emmanuel) as she travels to London for a friend’s wedding. Once there, all manners of hijinks ensues, from her falling in love with another friend’s boyfriend to the general passage of long-established friendships changing over time. The trailer predominately sets up Maya’s own issues — she’s a working on a senatorial campaign, is single and apparently sticks out compared to her other college friends — though it does touch on a soon-to-be married couples own faults and gives us glimpses at a cameo from original castmember, McDowall.

The anthology series has been in development for awhile courtesy of Kaling, who serves as an executive producer. (Maybe she knew we’d need this now that The Office is leaving Netflix?) The actress, who just celebrated her birthday, has been making some serious power plays behind the camera. Her feature film Late Night might not have box office smash but many are praising Kaling’s script. She’s also developing a 10-episode series for Netflix based around her childhood, as well as a buddy comedy with Priyanka Chopra. That’s on top of being a mother to her darling 18-month-old daughter, Katherine.

The series looks to hold the original spirit of the film, pleasing fans new and old. You can certainly hear Kaling’s voice through the characters as well, making this another notch on her impressive screenwriting belt.

Four Weddings and a Funeral premieres on Hulu July 31st.
