Prince William Almost Dated an American Meghan Too & Wow, What Could’ve Been

Maybe it runs in the family. Prince William almost dated an American Meghan before Kate Middleton. Like his brother Prince Harry — who, of course, is married to American actress Meghan Markle — the Duke of Cambridge also had his eyes on an American Meghan: Meghann Gundermann, William’s American classmate at the University of St. Andrews.

According to royal biographer Katie Nicholl’s new book, Kate: The Future Queen, William almost beat his brother to marrying an American when he was a student at the University of St. Andrews (where he, coincidentally, also met his future wife, Kate Middleton, who is British and not American.) Nicholl claims that William had a crush on a classmate named Meghann Gundermann, an international student and heiress from Texas who went by the nickname “Gundy.”

However, the romance was short-lived. When William asked Meghann on a date, the Texan — much to William’s surprise — turned him down. “When William asked her out — something he did not do lightly — it came as somewhat of a shock when she declined his advances. This seemed to make him want her more,” Nicholl wrote.

It turned out OK for William, though. In 2001, while he was still a student at St. Andrews, he met his future wife Kate Middleton while the two were residents at St. Salvador Hall. The couple dated on and off until their wedding 2011. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge share three children: Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1. William may not have been the first to marry an American Meghan, but we doubt he’s complaining. Plus, imagine how confusing family get-togethers would be with two Meghans?
