We’re getting very teary-eyed over this moving essay. Angelina Jolie revealed her advice to daughters Shiloh, Zahara and Vivienne in a beautifully-written essay for Elle magazine, and we need tissues. The Maleficent: Mistress of Evil star wrote the emotional essay for Elle’s latest issue, where she discussed independence and the qualities she loves to see in her daughters.

In the personal essay, the filmmaker and actress touched on a range of topics, including how women are treated in society and how she’s encouraging her daughters to be independent. Jolie shared nothing but pride over the young adults her children are becoming, while highlighting the sincere advice she’s given to her daughters. “I often tell my daughters that the most important thing they can do is to develop their minds,” Jolie shared in the essay. “You can always put on a pretty dress, but it doesn’t matter what you wear on the outside if your mind isn’t strong.”

Jolie went on to add, “There is nothing more attractive — you might even say enchanting — than a woman with an independent will and her own opinions.” Jolie shares six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt: Maddox, who turns 18 on August 5, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shiloh, 13, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 11.

The activist also wrote about how important it is for her daughters to develop their own minds, especially with all the judgement around them. “I think we can often go offtrack as women, because our instinct is to nurture or to adjust ourselves to society’s expectations,” Jolie contemplates in the essay. “It can be hard to take the time to ask ourselves who we truly want to be — not what we think other people will approve of or accept, but who we really are.” Jolie dedicated her essay to “all the wicked women, and the men who understand them.” Some advice we could all strive for.
