When a couple consists of two competitive people, that can quickly become messy — but if you’re both good sports about it, it can make for a lot of fun too. Kate Middleton’s reaction to losing to Prince William in a charity sail race suggests that she really thought she’d do better than last place, but it also shows she doesn’t take herself too seriously. She and William seem to be happily poking fun at Kate’s last-place prize (a giant wooden spoon) after the race.
The charity sailing race took place on Thursday, Aug. 8, on the Isle of Wight, with seven teams competing for the coveted King’s Cup, a trophy dating back to 1920. As Prince George and Princess Charlotte looked on, Kate and William helmed their respective teams. William’s team came in third for the first round, then in fifth; Kate’s team came in seventh in the first race, and was then disqualified from the second race for starting too early. So — not a perfect showing for the Cambridge Duchess — but as you’ll see, she certainly has a sense of humor about it.
As Kate’s team placed last overall, she was given the giant wooden spoon prize, to which Kate responded by laughing hysterically and ducking her face into her hands. William seems to be getting in on the joke too, pointing to the spoon with delight.
Bear Grylls ultimately led the winning team for his charity Tusk Trust, an organization that works to preserve African wildlife. But look at what a good time Kate and William are clearly having here! In our minds, they’re the real winners of this race — and given that it’s a charity race, everyone involved is a winner as is.
