Move Over, Mike & Derek! Peter Weber Is Apparently the Next Bachelor Frontrunner

If you’ve been campaigning for Mike Johnson or Derek Peth to be the next man handing out roses to romantic hopefuls on TV, you better start campaigning harder. Per Us Weekly, several sources have now confirmed that Peter Weber is the frontrunner to be the next Bachelor, in which case he’d be the one wielding roses when the reality dating series returns in 2020.

As you may well remember, the 28-year-old pilot from California nearly flew away (couldn’t resist) with Hannah Brown’s heart during the most recent season of The Bachelorette. He made it all the way to the top three before being sent home. And while Weber is certainly likable enough, he hasn’t exactly been the suitor on everyone’s minds. Mike Johnson, a 31-year-old Air Force veteran also from Brown’s season, has been the talk of Bachelor Nation in recent weeks — along with fellow Bachelor in Paradise contestant Derek Peth.

However, sources apparently insist that neither guy will likely end up at the helm. Why? ABC has its eye set on Weber. “Fans love Mike, but Peter has been the producers’ front-runner all along,” an insider told Us Weekly. “They also looked at how viewers responded to this year’s Bachelor in Paradise contestants.”

Interestingly, it seems that Weber wouldn’t even be in contention right now if life post-Bachelorette had played out a bit differently. According to Us’ sources, Brown’s runner-up, Tyler Cameron, was assumed all along to be the next Bachelor. But one source noted that Cameron “has been out of the running since he started seeing Gigi Hadid.”

While we’ll be the first to admit we’ve been hoping for a season with Johnson as the lead, we can’t say Weber is a boring choice. After all, what he is arguably remembered most for is Brown admitting the two had sex in a windmill… more than once. During The Bachelorette‘s live two-night finale at the end of July, Brown confessed, “I was a little dishonest about something. Since it’s out there. I did say there was something Peter and I did twice. It was actually four times.”

Hey now! If nothing else, it sounds like a season with Weber handing out the roses will be — how do we put it? — passionate.
