It’s been a bumpy few years for Batman star Ben Affleck, but this weekend may have proved that the actor is moving in the right direction. Affleck shared a birthday tradition with his kids at L.A. restaurant Barton G., where he apparently goes every year for his birthday dinner with family. Eyewitnesses describe a lovely, celebratory evening — and for Affleck’s sake, we hope he has many more ahead just like it.
Affleck shares three kids with ex-wife Jennifer Garner: daughters Violet (age 13) and Seraphina (age 10), and son Samuel (age 7). The four of them reportedly shared a feast of surf ‘n’ turf, filet mignon and a decadent signature dessert called Dolla Dolla Bills Y’all. Affleck was seen enjoying a Diet Coke with his meal — a detail likely noted due to his struggles with alcohol in recent years, which greatly contributed to the decline of his marriage and led the actor to check into rehab. (Affleck checked out of rehab roughly a year ago, and has since celebrated one year sober.)
While Garner was not seen at the dinner, a source tells Us Weekly that she and Affleck “have a very trusting and special relationship.” Affleck is still strongly committed to his recovery and sobriety, and “continues to want to be the best father and friend he can be.” The couple split in June 2015, and finalized their divorce in October 2018.

Ben Affleck was most recently dating television producer Lindsey Shookus, but the pair called it quits on their on-again off-again romance back in April 2019. Garner confirmed that she’s dating Cali Group CEO John Miller in October 2018, and a source told Us Weekly earlier this August that her new relationship has only strengthened Affleck’s resolve to be the best he can for his family. “Ben has no problem with John,” the source claimed. “He ultimately just wants to be the best father he can be and part of that is continuing a loving relationship with Jen.”
