Throughout history, there have been wars that burn bright and fast before fizzling out — and those that smolder indefinitely. And when it comes to the clash of two particular pop culture icons, it’s not a flash-in-the-pan feud. Need proof? Martha Stewart doesn’t “follow” Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, and we know this because the domestic maven said so while reigniting rumors of a longstanding rift between the two.
Of course, she did so in the most Martha Stewart way possible. According to People, the subject of Paltrow’s Goop empire came up during the debut episode of Alex Rodriguez and Barstool Sports’ The Corp season two podcast. To his credit, A-Rod certainly seemed to be swinging for the proverbial fence when he asked Stewart, “How would you describe what Gwyneth Paltrow is doing today versus what Martha Stewart created years ago?” And while we can’t imagine Stewart over-seasons much, her response was salty.
“I don’t follow Goop. Sometimes I look at products that she’s selling,” Stewart said. “I wish every young entrepreneur well and I hope that there are many, many, many different kinds of entrepreneurs… if they’re movie stars or hardworking women like I am, who are not movie stars. If they have a good idea, I want them to be able to succeed. So good luck, Gwyneth.”
Yowza. There are so many layers there, it’s hard to even know where to begin. Admittedly, Stewart could have simply been being honest. Instead of raving about Goop disingenuously, she came right out with the fact that she isn’t one of Goop’s many fans. Still, she believes in female entrepreneurs and wishes them well. But — and it’s a big one — there definitely seemed to be some bite in her comments about movie stars vs. “hardworking women.”
Then there’s the matter of Stewart and Paltrow’s history. The so-called feud dates back to 2013 (at least publicly) when Stewart referenced Paltrow during an interview on Bloomberg TV. “She wants to be a lifestyle arbiter. Fine. Good. I think I started this whole category of lifestyle,” Stewart stated.
In subsequent years, Stewart has taken highly publicized jabs at Paltrow over the term “conscious uncoupling,”her acting (“If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart”), and Goop’s influence (“Who’s Goop?).
As Stewart said of Paltrow in the past, though, she must be doing something right. The Goop lifestyle empire is worth over $250 million dollars. But one thing’s for certain: Stewart isn’t buying it. Any of it — 18k gold dumbbells and vagina steamers be damned.
