Alright, alright, alright — class is in session. Matthew McConaughey is officially on the faculty at University of Texas Austin, teaching a script-to-screen production class aimed at helping students becoming better directors, screenwriters and editors. And now that McConaughey is a professor at UT, we’ve never been more eager to sign up for a class taught by a Magic Mike star.
The class will be open to upper-division film students and use specific movies to look at how film producing and directing happens. According to the class description, students will “[study] script drafts, shot lists, storyboards, early edits and even exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, students will garner insight into the making of a major Hollywood feature.” There’s no word on what specific films McConaughey has included during the course, but we’d like to think Magic Mike and Serenity (with his celebrity crush, Diane Lane) will be on the docket.
The university’s college of communications announced the new course on their Twitter saying, “In recognition of his professional pedigree and personal investment in student success, Matthew McConaughey has been appointed a #TEXASMoody professor of practice.”

If you’re worried about McConaughey’s qualifications — he did admit his daughter was smarter than him — he’s got that covered. He graduated from the university with a bachelor’s degree in 1993. For his current class, he worked with the university design the course curriculum and co-taught it as a visiting instructor. McConaughey is also a frequent visitor to his alma mater, appearing at university basketball and football games and even starring in an instructional safety video.

We all might giggle at McConaughey taking on a professorship, but he certainly seems interested in film history. He also won an Academy Award which, in many circles, already makes you bonafide as a scholar. McConaughey now joins an exclusive world of celebrities turned teachers that includes James Franco and Spike Lee.
