Charlize Theron Looks Basically Unrecognizable in Fast & Furious 9 Thanks to a Bowl Haircut

She’s always been a chameleon when it comes to roles, and Charlize Theron’s dramatic new bowl haircut is the latest example of the actress changing her looks to get into character. What character, you ask? Well, Theron dropped a huge hint via social media on Monday, and — regardless of what they think about her distinctive new look — fans will likely be pumped about why Theron lopped off her locks.

Theron hopped onto Instagram to debut the conversation-starting ‘do, sharing a side-profile photo. “She’s baaaaack,” Theron coyly captioned the portrait. She added two important context clues as well, in case fans still hadn’t figured it out: the hashtag “#Fast9,” and a second image showing a chair with the name “Cipher” on the back. As in, yep, Theron’s badass cyberterrorist character from the Fast & Furious franchise will shift into high gear alongside Vin Diesel (aka Dom) and the gang. With at least one noticeable difference, of course, since Cipher has traded in her platinum dreads for a brown bowl cut.

Not surprisingly, the new ‘do is already garnering plenty of attention. “This hair is next level good. But would only look good on you,” commented January Jones. Sela Ward gushed, “Love your hair like that!” Michael B. Jordon dropped a wide-eyed-staring emoji, suggesting he was a fan of Theron’s edgy new style.

The last time we saw Theron’s Cipher was in The Fate of the Furious when she parachuted away from her airbase after killing one of the Toretto family’s loved ones. So, by the time Fast & the Furious 9 rolls around in 2020, it will have been a solid minute since fans saw Theron slip into the fierce role.

And it seems as though the cast is ready to welcome her back with open arms. Tyrese Gibson, who plays Roman Pearce, wrote, “Damn we missed you!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Theron will also be sharing the screen with returning stars Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham, Helen Mirren, Michelle Rodriguez and Ludacris, along with newcomers Michael Rooker and John Cena.

But also, that bowl cut deserves its own starring credit, right?
