If you’re in Queens this weekend, be sure to keep an eye out for a duchess on the loose. This morning, while most of you were snuggled in your beds, Meghan Markle boarded a flight to NYC to watch Serena Williams play in the US Open Final tomorrow, as People reports. Markle and Williams, who became friends almost 10 years ago at the Miami Super Bowl in 2010, have a long history of supporting each other in their personal lives. Markle apparently loves her friend so much, she’s flying solo — and commercial. (First class, we’re sure.)
In February, Williams helped plan Markle’s baby shower at the Mark Hotel in New York, which Williams called “a lot.” Last summer, Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, flew to the U.K. to watch Prince Harry play a polo match. And of course, Williams and Ohanian were on hand for the Duchess and Prince’s royal wedding last year.
There’s a lot on the line at the US Open tomorrow. Williams, 38, needs just one more win to tie with Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. Tomorrow, that opportunity will come in her final against Canadian 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu. The key, it seems, is that she needs to stay calm and collected — easier said than done when so much is on the line. “Obviously there’s a lot of things that I’ve learned in the past,” Williams told the New York Times, “but I just have to go out there and, above all, most of all, just stay relaxed.”

The odds are technically for her: Williams has been named champion of 21 of her first 25 Grand Slam finals, but she has lost five of the past seven she has played, and all three she has competed in since coming back to tennis last year after she gave birth to her daughter, Olympia, two years ago.
Win or lose, Williams will have Markle in the stands cheering for her, which has to count for something. And for those of us who will be following along at home, we’ll have the chance to admire Markle’s outfit from the stands — just another boldfaced name the TV cameras will zoom in on as Williams makes her plays. We’ll be cheering you on too, Williams! Just not from the stands.
