C’mon, admit it. You’ve spent the last month counting down the days until October so the Halloween-movie-watching can commence, and we all know you’re waiting for one in particular. Well, start rubbing on your lucky rat’s tail, because Sarah Jessica Parker just addressed a Hocus Pocus sequel — and she hinted that it’s basically a disservice to fans that this 1993 cult classic hasn’t been revisited yet.
On Wednesday, the actress sat down with ET’s Nischelle Turner to toast the launch of her new wine, INVIVO X, Sarah Jessica Parker Sauvignon Blanc. In keeping with the occasion, the pair decided to play a game of “Sip or Spill,” during which SJP either had to take a sip of her new wine or answer a pressing fan question. Not surprisingly, talk invariably turned to some of the iconic characters Parker has played and which ones she thinks should be adapted for today’s audience.
Hold onto your broomsticks, friends (or vacuum cleaners, whatev). “It’s hard to ignore the public outcry for Hocus Pocus,” Parker admitted of the treasured Halloween flick. “I mean, it’s really hard to ignore the deafening cry for a sequel.” And to paraphrase the one-and-only Winifred Sanderson, don’t tell us to call down… we are calm!
Don’t let your hopes run amuck, amuck, amuck just yet though. For starters, there is currently a Hocus Pocus reboot in the works at Disney. A TV movie, it will reportedly air on Freeform and feature an entirely new cast. Original star Bette Midler, who played head-witch-in-charge Winifred, wasn’t impressed when news of the project broke in 2017. Speaking to People at the time, she said, “I’m not sure what they’re going to do with my character. My character is very, very broad and I don’t know who they’re going to find to play that.”
That’s fair. Having said that, Parker and Kathy Najimy — who played the other Sanderson sisters Sarah and Mary, respectively — have both expressed an interest in revisiting the film at some point. With Parker’s new comments, could a direct sequel possibly be in the pipeline?
If you ask us, the timing would be pretty perfect, considering the new Disney Plus streaming platform launches Nov. 12. Hmm, do you think Book has a spell for conjuring up movie deals?
