It must be so wild to find out that your parents are famous. Hilary Duff showed her kids The Lizzie McGuire Movie for the first time this week, and they seemed riveted. The actress is gearing up to star in a reboot of the popular Disney Channel series next year for Disney+ and looked to be showing off the role that made her famous to her two children, 11-month-old Banks and 7-year-old Luca.
Captured on the Instagram of Duff’s fiancé, Matthew Koma, the family huddles under blankets on the couch to watch the 2003 feature. Little Luca can’t take his eyes away from the screen as he sees his mom, just sixteen years old, singing Blondie’s “The Tide is High.” Banks seems more interested in the water bottle she’s drinking from, though that’s just good multitasking.
The best reaction, though, is Duff’s, who starts to cringingly laugh as she hears her younger self sing. Who can blame her? None of us want to see our 16-year-old selves thinking we’re Broadway-bound, let alone have it saved in a feature film for all eternity.
Duff starred as the title character on the Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire starting in 2000. The show was an instant success, ushering in a string of popular Disney Channel programming that included Even Stevens. Lizzie McGuire followed Duff’s tween girl as she navigated friends, family and middle school. The movie spin-off, which saw Lizzie and her friends go to Rome, garnered over $50 worldwide upon release 16 years ago.

Initially, Lizzie McGuire was set to transfer from Disney Channel to ABC and look at Lizzie’s life in high school, but contract negotiations with Duff’s representatives caused her to part ways with the company, and the series was ended in 2004.
Duff isn’t complaining. Since her tenure as Lizzie, she’s gone on to star in the series Younger and recently became the mom of a little girl who’s already showing off some musical chops. Duff seems to be doing some research on her old role, though a lot isn’t known about the new spin-off — other than the fact that it will focus on Lizzie McGuire as a 30-year-old millennial navigating life in New York City.
“She’s working as an apprentice to a fancy New York City decorator,” Duff said of her character during a recent appearance. “She has her dream guy, who owns a cool SoHo restaurant. She has her dream apartment in Brooklyn. And she’s getting ready to celebrate her 30th birthday.” As long as Lizzie hasn’t lost her penchant for singing Blondie, we’ll be good.
