We’re so glad everyone is OK. Kate Middleton and Prince William’s plane was in an electrical storm during their Pakistan tour on Thursday, and the terrifying incident forced their flight to abort its landing and turn around.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s flight returned to the Pakistani city of Lahore after it failed to execute two landing attempts at Islamabad International Airport, according to People.
The aircraft was forced instead to circle the country’s capital city for about an hour before ultimately returning to the point from which it originally departed, about 25 minutes away.
“Those big flashes are the RAF Voyager, carrying William, Kate and travelling media, going through lighting – two aborted landings at Islamabad due to the storm and we’re back in Lahore,” PA Media reporter Emma Louise Bowden tweeted alongside a scary video.
“Phew. Landed! But in Lahore,” wrote royal reporter Simon Perry. “A terrifying electrical storm hit as we tried to land at Islamabad. Lightning seemed to be crashing around the right wing. Despite the best efforts of the pilot of William and Kate’s RAF Voyager plane we couldn’t couldn’t land there.”
The royals were uninjured during the ordeal. After they landed in Lahore, Prince William — an experienced pilot himself — reassured members of the media onboard and joked that he’d been flying the plane, as People reports.

The royals have been on their Pakistani tour, where the Duchess paid sartorial tribute to her late mother-in-law, wearing the same hat Princess Diana wore during her 1991 visit to Pakistan.
The royal couple has not been traveling with their children — but they are checking in daily. “William and Kate have been checking in every day and call the kids before they go to bed,” a royal insider told Us Weekly.
