One Reason Why Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani Aren’t Married (Yet)

Updated Jan. 22, 2020, 12 p.m. ET:

While Gwen Stefani has long remained adamant that she would only marry Blake Shelton in a Catholic church, it seems both singers’ patience has run out. Stefani had been waiting for the church to annul her marriage to ex Gavin Rossdale, but now says she’ll marry Shelton either way.

A source told Us Weekly that Stefani “very much wants the marriage to be recognized by the church,” and added that “Gwen’s religion has always been extremely important to her.” But as her attempts to get the marriage annulled have drawn on, the source suggested that Shelton has been increasingly eager to move on to the next step.

A second source told the magazine that the delay on their wedding plans has caused “tense moments” between the couple, and that more formal wedding planning is starting to take shape. This source claimed they still plan to have a church wedding in Beverly Hills, followed by a party at Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch.

Finally, a third source has reported that kids are definitely on Shelton and Stefani’s minds. “If it doesn’t happen, Blake’s content with her three kids,” the source said. But trying to have a baby together is one more reason this couple might be hurrying down the aisle.

Four years into their romance, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are ready to wed — but there’s a holdup. While the world waits with bated breath to hear news of an official engagement, a new source says that the couple is working hard behind the scenes to resolve a roadblock in their journey toward the aisle. So, what’s responsible for the delay? Stefani’s faith.

If the frequency or sheer volume of engagement and/or wedding rumors about a couple is any indication of how well-liked they are, it’s safe to say Shelton and Stefani are beloved by the public. People seem to be rooting for the two to make it and, per numerous sources, that’s the couple’s intention. They just have one last issue to take care of before they’re clear to get hitched. “Blake was very serious about Gwen right from the start, and early on he thought about proposing,” a Stefani insider told People. However, Stefani is a practicing Roman Catholic who wants to have a church wedding.

In order to do so, her faith requires any earlier marriage to be annulled before remarriage is sanctioned (she was previously married to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale for 13 years). For that reason, the Stefani insider says a church ceremony “isn’t possible currently.” Still, a friend of the couple insists, “It’s definitely headed toward marriage.”

And it isn’t just Shelton and Stefani who feel good about the Voice couple’s projected path toward holy matrimony. Stefani’s sons — Kingston, 13, Zuma, 11, and Apollo, 5 — share a close bond with Shelton. In general, the duo’s families seem to get along great and approve of the pairing. “They’re all very like-minded and comfortable with each other. Gwen brings this sparkle to the country world. Her love for Blake is clear, and she’s been embraced by everyone,” said the insider.

Thanks to a joint appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in November, we also know that Stefani’s family approves of Shelton. Maybe a little too much even. “I remember the first time I went to Oklahoma with my family. We are, like, from Anaheim. We’d never even seen trees before. So we were like, ‘Wow, this is, like, crazy,'” Stefani recounted. As they drove along, they came across a downed tree in the road. Sizing it up, Shelton hopped into the back of his truck. “He has, like, a big chain and he pulls it out. He wraps it around the tree, and my whole family is, like, ‘Oh my God, he’s a man!'”

Sounds like a pretty ringing endorsement from the Stefani fam, right? With the support of their friends, family and the public, it’s little wonder these two are cruising on cloud nine. As People’s source put it, “They fall more and more in love with one another, and their happiness quotient keeps rising.”
