Shawn Johnson East is enjoying new mom life — and that means both with her precious baby girl, Drew Hazel East, and on a special night out without her.
The Olympic gold medalist took to Instagram to share a pic from her date night out with husband Andrew East, apparently at the Nashville Predators versus Buffalo Sabres hockey game. “A much needed mom and dad datenight,” she captioned the pic. “The stronger our relationship is the better parents we can be.” She added the hashtags for #parents and #datenight.
Cute, right? But what really warmed out hearts about this post was this: The comments were overwhelmingly positive in support of the new parents enjoying a grown-folks-only evening. That’s a refreshingly far cry from the mom shaming celebs like Chrissy Teigen and others have encountered when sharing snaps from their time away from their wee ones.
The positive comments from followers and fans rolled in, one after the next.

“In order to be good parents you have to be happy together and have dates as often as you can. Your kids will always be happy if you are happy. Good job and happy holidays.”
A supportive community is essential to new parents’ success — and something I was lucky to have on my first nights out with my husband after my twins, now five years old, were born. My kids are fortunate to have all four of their grandparents in town, affording us some grownup time away, even early on. And friends were always happy for us… if even a little amazed that we managed to make it happen amid the chaos and fog of new parenthood to two newborns!
So indeed — good for this new mom and dad on their date night… and good for fans, too, for recognizing and celebrating its importance!
