On Wednesday, December 18, Donald Trump became only the third president in United States history to be impeached — and, not surprisingly, celebrities are reacting to the history-making news on social media. From Bette Midler and John Legend in favor of to John Voight and Kirstie Alley opposed to, stars are taking to Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and more in order to weigh in with their thoughts on the biggest political news of the day (and, arguably, decade).
To recap, the House voted to impeach the real-estate-mogul-turned-president, 73, based on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The charges levied against Trump stem from weeks of testimony related to his dealings with Ukraine and alleged impropriety regarding election interference. Shortly before the official impeachment news came down, Trump sent a six-page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, accusing the Democratic Party of a partisan “crusade” and “spiteful” abuse of power. Throughout the impeachment hearings, political-minded celebrities have been following along and sharing their thoughts via social media. Some of the most outspoken critics of Trump, such as Midler and Milano, were among the first to respond to the breaking news last night.
Here’s what celebrities are saying in support of the impeachment.

Today is a sad but necessary day for American democracy. The U.S. House has voted to impeach President Trump, and that is the right thing to do. pic.twitter.com/5TtMWGUOJt

The House of Representatives rightly carried out its constitutional responsibility by voting to impeach Donald Trump, the most corrupt president in our history. No one, including the president, is above the law.
— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) December 19, 2019
Donald Trump has abused our diplomatic relationships and undermined our national security for his own personal, political gain. By voting to impeach him, the House has taken an important step to hold him accountable. I'm ready to fulfill my constitutional duty in the Senate.

The GOP speakers at the impeachment debate should dress up as cats, just so we get two ridiculous things that no sane person should ever be subjected to out of the way in one fell swoop.

#Trump blocked his aides from testifying and refused to release a single document. He stonewalled, #MsCheney. He has called upon foreign nations to interfere in our elections repeatedly and in public. He should have been removed with the words,”Russia, if you’re listening!”

Impeached.

Maxine Waters didn’t even want to go through all the reasons Trump should be impeached, but I can guarantee they would make a lot more sense than that 6-page letter Trump sent to Nancy Pelosi.

This President is not being Impeached because he’s a liar or immoral or a misogynist or a white nationalist or incompetent or ignorant. He’s being Impeached because he committed the High Crimes of Abuse of Power & Obstruction of Congress.

It's fascinating to me, having observed politics for a long time, that @realDonaldTrump's strategy is to campaign and act as if he's not paying attention to what's happening on Capitol Hill while he's being impeached in real time. https://t.co/KVhftoIqS4
