The First Teaser for Jennifer Hudson’s Aretha Franklin Biopic Respect Is Here, & We’re Getting Chills

When we hear Jennifer Hudson is starring in a new musical, we’re in.  Hudson’s Aretha Franklin biopic Respect dropped its first teaser, and it’s every bit as magical as we hoped. Whether you’re a fan of Hudson, a fan of Franklin, or a fan of both, you’re going to love this 2020 film.

The teaser is brief, but it gives us a good look at how this movie is going to showcase Hudson’s phenomenal voice. Hudson stands on a dark stage in a long, sparkly gown, as gold lights flicker behind her. She sings Franklin’s classic “Respect,” and it’s probably the best rendition we’ve heard outside the original.

A few seconds before the teaser ends, the stage lights up behind her with the word RESPECT. It’s flashy, over-the-top, and fabulous — and made us so excited for what this glammed-out film will show us of Franklin’s life.

Before you get too excited, we do have some sobering news: This biopic isn’t slated to hit theaters until Oct. 9, 2020. Even so, there are plenty of details we can start obsessing over now.

First: While anyone who’s seen Dreamgirls will know Hudson was a clear choice to play Franklin, it’s worth noting that Franklin herself approved the casting choice — the ultimate stamp of approval. And the exciting cast doesn’t stop there. Hudson will be joined by Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Mary J. Blige, Audra McDonald, Heather Headley, Tituss Burges, and Marc Maron.

With this incredible line-up, we’re pretty sure Respect will be headed straight for the 2021 Oscars (too soon to predict?). At the very least, the soundtrack will have to be nominated, right?
