A big double congrats could be in order! Per several sources, Michelle Williams is reportedly engaged to Tony Award-winning Hamilton director Thomas Kail — and the couple is expecting their first child together. Even sweeter? According to People, Williams’ 14-year-old daughter Matilda (with late actor Heath Ledger) played matchmaker to bring Williams and Kail together.
Although the details of Matilda’s matchmaking are unknown, we do know that Kail and Williams have worked together before: He directed her in the FX mini-series Fosse/Verdon, for which she ultimately won an Emmy for lead actress. And Williams and Kail haven’t released an official statement yet regarding their potential engagement or pregnancy, photographs of the two taken in London certainly seem to suggest both. In one snapshot of Kail and Williams walking together, the actress appears to have a tell-tale ring on her left hand. She was also spotted buying baby clothes at Seraphine’s maternity boutique in Kensington, a source told People.
News of Williams and Kail’s possible engagement comes eight months after Williams’ public split from Mount Eerie folk musician Phil Alverum — sources told ET that the pair, who quietly tied the knot in the Adirondacks in 2018, privately separated at the beginning of the year. According to People, Kail was previously in a relationship with theater actress Angela Christian (it’s unclear if Kail is still legally married to Christian).

Through it all, though, Williams never lost faith in finding love again. In 2018, while speaking to Vanity Fair, she opened up about losing Ledger and how she addressed moving on with Matilda. “When you’re a single parent, and that element of provider and protection is missing, it’s scary,” she told the magazine. “I always say to Matilda, ‘Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.’ I never gave up on love.”
Her advice for others who may be unhappy or lonely or bereft? “Don’t settle. Don’t settle for something that feels like a prison or is hard, or hurts you,” she said. “If it doesn’t feel like love, it’s not love.”
Judging by this latest break of news surrounding Williams’ life, it seems as though she found the real deal.
