Praise be, because Netflix just dropped the first trailer for season six of Grace and Frankie! At long last, everyone’s favorite boozy small-screen besties are back. And this time, they’re tackling marriage, the changing dynamics of female friendship and… toilets? That’s right — not only is Frankie in the throes of a “complete breakdown,” but the women have also decided to shift their entrepreneurial gears.
In the just-released trailer for the upcoming season, we get a hint of the fallout from Grace (Jane Fonda) springing her secret elopement on Frankie (Lily Tomlin). As to be expected, Frankie isn’t exactly handling the transition well. But then again, Grace doesn’t seem to be making a seamless adjustment either. At one point, she laments how long it’s been since she’s had to play the part of the arm-candy wife to a husband. In another scene, she goes to the bathroom late at night in the swanky apartment of her new, younger husband Nick (Peter Gallagher) — and struggles to lift herself off the toilet seat after with comical consequences.
You know what they say, though: Necessity is the mother of invention. Grace’s embarrassing toilet bowl episode reinvigorates both her business and friendship with Frankie when the women decide to develop a new product. This time, instead of senior-citizen-friendly vibrators, they’re launching a lift for toilet seats to help senior citizens avoid the debacle Grace found herself in.
“This is what we do! We take an obstacle and we make an opportunity,” Frankie tells Grace, right before revealing that the toilet seat contraption will be called “The Rise Up.” And even more exciting, the trailer ends with the women undertaking one of their most daring adventures yet: pitching their product on ABC’s Shark Tank.
Of course, season six won’t just follow Grace and Frankie’s journey. Their respective kids (played by June Diane Raphael and Brooklyn Decker for Fonda and Baron Vaughn and Ethan Embry for Tomlin) all have auxiliary storylines by now. And who can forget about the women’s ex-husbands-turned-each-other-s-husbands, Sol (Sam Waterson) and Robert (Martin Sheen)? They have their own uphill battle to face, as Sol deals with a looming health-related surgery.
Considering this is the penultimate season of the series, there will undoubtedly be plenty of surprises and a lot of ground to cover as Grace, Frankie and the rest of the gang gear up to say goodbye to fans. For now, though, we can focus on the positive: Season six hits Netflix on Jan. 15.
Obviously, we’re — dare we say it? — flush with excitement.
